Basalt
A dense, dark volcanic stone popular for modern floors, pool surrounds, steps and outdoor paving.
Basalt is a fine-grained volcanic stone in charcoal to blue-grey tones, often supplied honed, sawn or flamed. It suits indoor floors, alfresco areas, pool coping and driveways, and is hard-wearing in high-traffic spaces.
Although dense, basalt still has small natural pores and open vesicles that can draw in oil, food and organic stains. A penetrating sealer helps reduce staining and makes cleaning easier, while a pH-neutral stone cleaner suits routine maintenance. Outdoors, regular cleaning helps keep mould, leaf marks and efflorescence under control.

Step 1 What finish is your basalt?

Your finish
Flamed basalt
Flamed basalt is torch-treated to give it a rough, matte texture with a slightly open surface that feels coarse underfoot. This tends to be fairly absorbent, so sealing can suit a Natural Look, a Colour Enhanced finish for richer tones, or a High Gloss coating for more shine.

Your finish
Honed basalt
Honed basalt has a smooth, flat matte surface created by grinding back the stone without polishing it to shine. It is moderately porous, so a Natural Look sealer helps keep the matte appearance, while a Colour Enhanced option can deepen the grey-black tones.

Polished basalt
Polished basalt is ground and buffed to a smooth, glossy surface that shows off the stone's dark colour and fine grain. Being denser, it's less absorbent than other finishes, and a Natural Look sealer or Colour Enhanced option can maintain or deepen that reflective look.

Sandblasted basalt
Sand blasted basalt is treated with high-pressure sand to create a slightly textured, non-reflective surface with a subtle grainy feel. This finish can be fairly porous, so sealing with a Natural Look, Colour Enhanced, or High Gloss product helps protect it while suiting different style preferences.

Textured basalt
Textured basalt refers to the stone's natural, unaltered surface, which has some grip and an uneven, tactile feel underfoot. It tends to be porous and can benefit from a Natural Look sealer that helps reduce staining without changing its raw appearance.

Tumbled basalt
Tumbled basalt is mechanically aged to create a softened, slightly pitted surface with rounded edges and a rustic, weathered feel. It's often quite porous, so sealing options include a Natural Look to preserve its character, a Colour Enhanced finish for richer tones, or a High Gloss coating for added shine.
