Limestone
A soft, calcium-based sedimentary stone with a warm, natural look for floors, walls and paving.
Limestone is a sedimentary stone formed mainly from calcium carbonate, often in soft cream, beige and grey tones. It is used for floors, bathrooms, feature walls, pool surrounds and outdoor paving, in honed, tumbled and textured finishes.
Limestone is porous and acid-sensitive, so it can stain from oil, wine and coffee and etch from acidic spills or cleaners. Sealing helps reduce staining and makes cleaning easier. Avoid acidic cleaners, vinegar and lemon; use a pH-neutral stone cleaner for routine care and a poultice to draw out deeper stains.

Step 1 What finish is your limestone?

Your finish
Flamed limestone
Flamed limestone is torch-treated to create a rough, textured surface with a matt, rustic feel underfoot. It tends to be quite porous, so sealing helps reduce staining, and suits a natural look, a colour enhanced finish, or a high gloss coating depending on preference.

Your finish
Honed limestone
Honed limestone has a smooth, flat, satin-like surface with minimal shine, achieved by grinding back the stone. It remains fairly absorbent, so sealing helps protect it, working well with either a natural look or a colour enhanced finish for richer tones.

Your finish
Polished limestone
Polished limestone is ground and buffed to a glossy, reflective surface that shows the stone's natural pattern clearly. It can still absorb spills despite its shine, so sealing helps reduce staining while keeping a natural look or deepening colour with a colour enhanced option.

Sandblasted limestone
Sand blasted limestone has a textured, slightly pitted surface created by blasting it with fine sand, giving good grip underfoot. It tends to be quite porous, so sealing helps reduce staining while maintaining a natural look with no visible change.

Textured limestone
Textured limestone keeps the stone's natural uneven surface, offering a rustic feel and helpful slip resistance in wet areas. It can be fairly absorbent, so sealing helps reduce staining and marking while preserving a natural look with no obvious change in appearance.

Tumbled limestone
Tumbled limestone is mechanically aged to create rounded edges and a worn, textured surface with a rustic charm. It tends to be porous, so sealing helps reduce staining, suiting a natural look, a colour enhanced finish, or a high gloss coating for more shine.
