Porcelain tiles
Dense, fired tiles used across floors, walls, bathrooms and alfresco areas for their durability.
Porcelain tiles are made from fine clay fired at high temperatures, creating a dense, hard-wearing tile with very low porosity. They are used throughout homes and commercial spaces, including bathrooms, kitchens, living areas and outdoor alfresco zones.
Glazed porcelain rarely needs sealing, but polished and some matt or textured porcelains have micro-pores that can hold dirt and marks, and may benefit from a suitable sealer. Care mainly focuses on the grout, which is porous and stains easily, and on regular cleaning. Use a pH-neutral cleaner day to day and a tile cleaner for grout haze and grime.

Step 1 What finish is your porcelain tiles?

Your finish
Honed porcelain tiles
A honed finish is ground to a smooth matt surface, giving porcelain tiles a soft, flat look without shine. This finish is fairly low in porosity, but a sealer offering a Natural Look can help protect the surface without changing its appearance.

Lappato (semi-polished) porcelain tiles
A lapato, or semi-polished, finish combines matt and shiny areas for subtle contrast and texture across the porcelain tile. It resists moisture reasonably well, so sealing is mainly worthwhile for the grout lines, with regular cleaning helping keep the surface looking fresh.

Polished porcelain tiles
A polished finish is mechanically buffed to a high shine, giving porcelain tiles a reflective, glass-like surface. It is quite dense and low in absorbency, so a Natural Look sealer can help guard against staining while leaving the glossy appearance unchanged.

Rough / highly textured porcelain tiles
A rough or highly textured finish has a pronounced, uneven surface that adds grip underfoot, often used in outdoor or wet area porcelain tiles. It can trap dirt more easily, so a High Sheen coating sealer may help with cleaning, though it can also affect slip resistance.

Textured porcelain tiles
A textured finish refers to the tile's standard surface pattern, giving porcelain tiles a bit more grip and visual interest than a flat finish. It tends to collect dirt in the texture, so regular cleaning helps, with sealing mainly useful for protecting the grout.
