Shellstone
A pale limestone packed with fossilised shell fragments, popular for pool surrounds and outdoor paving.
Shellstone, also called coquina, is a limestone made largely of fossilised shells and coral fragments. Its pale cream tone and natural texture suit pool surrounds, alfresco areas and coastal-style paving, as it stays relatively cool underfoot.
Shellstone is very porous and acid-sensitive, so it readily absorbs oil, food, leaf and tannin stains and can etch from acidic products. Sealing helps reduce staining and makes cleaning easier. Avoid acidic cleaners and pool acid splash; use a pH-neutral or alkaline stone cleaner, and treat mould and algae outdoors promptly.

Step 1 What finish is your shellstone?

Your finish
Honed shellstone
A honed finish gives shellstone a smooth, flat matte surface without shine, achieved by grinding back the stone rather than polishing it. Shellstone is naturally porous with visible shell cavities, so sealing helps reduce staining, with a Colour Enhanced sealer deepening its tones or a Natural Look sealer keeping the appearance unchanged.

Your finish
Polished shellstone
Polished shellstone has a glossy, reflective surface created by buffing the stone to a fine, smooth sheen that highlights its natural shell patterns. Despite the shine, the material remains porous underneath, so sealing helps reduce staining, with a Colour Enhanced sealer deepening colour or a Natural Look sealer leaving it unchanged.

Sandblasted shellstone
Sand blasted shellstone has a rougher, uneven texture created by blasting the surface with fine abrasive particles, giving it a more rustic, aged appearance. This process can open up the stone's natural pores further, so sealing with a Natural Look product helps reduce staining and absorption without changing its weathered look.

Textured shellstone
A textured finish is simply the shellstone's natural surface, left with its characteristic shell imprints and uneven, tactile feel rather than being ground or polished smooth. This surface tends to be quite porous, so sealing with a Natural Look sealer helps reduce staining while leaving the authentic texture and appearance unchanged.

Tumbled shellstone
Tumbled shellstone is mechanically rounded and roughened to create a worn, aged look with softened edges and a slightly textured feel. This process can increase porosity, so sealing helps reduce staining, with a Colour Enhanced sealer deepening tones, a Natural Look sealer keeping it unchanged, or a High Gloss sealer adding shine.
