Handmade terracotta
Hand-shaped clay tiles with irregular edges, uneven surfaces and rich, variegated earthy colour.
Handmade terracotta tiles are shaped by hand and fired at low temperatures, so each tile varies in size, thickness and colour. They give rustic kitchens, living areas and verandahs a warm, authentic character.
Handmade terracotta is softer and more porous than machine-made tiles, so it absorbs water, oil, food and grout very readily. Sealing before and after grouting helps reduce staining and grout haze, and a coating sealer can add a protective sheen. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner, avoid harsh acids, and re-seal high-traffic areas as needed.

Step 1 What finish is your handmade terracotta?

Your finish
Textured handmade terracotta
This is the natural, slightly uneven surface typical of hand made terracotta, with visible ripples and texture from the traditional moulding process. It tends to be quite porous and absorbent, so sealing helps reduce staining, with options for a Natural Look, Colour Enhanced finish to deepen its warm tones, or a High Gloss coating for extra shine.

Your finish
Tumbled handmade terracotta
Tumbling gives hand made terracotta a softer, worn edge and matte, rustic texture, slightly rougher than the standard surface. It can be quite porous, so sealing with a Natural Look option helps reduce staining and makes everyday cleaning easier while keeping the tile's original appearance unchanged.
