Terrazzo
A composite of marble or stone chips set in cement or resin, ground smooth for floors and benchtops.
Terrazzo is made from chips of marble, granite, glass or other aggregates set in a cement or resin binder, then ground and polished. It is used for floors, stairs, benchtops, tiles and feature pieces in homes and commercial spaces.
Cement-based terrazzo is porous, and its marble chips and cement binder are acid-sensitive, so it can stain and etch. Sealing helps reduce staining and makes cleaning easier. Avoid acidic cleaners, vinegar and harsh chemicals; use a pH-neutral cleaner for routine care, and choose products made for acid-sensitive surfaces to remove soap scum or grout haze.

Step 1 What finish is your terrazzo?

Your finish
Brushed terrazzo
Brushed terrazzo has a mechanically worked surface that softens the polish, giving a slightly textured, matt-ish feel while keeping the aggregate visible. It tends to be moderately absorbent, and a Colour Enhanced sealer suits this finish well, bringing out the depth of the stone chips.

Flamed terrazzo
Flamed terrazzo is torch-treated to roughen the surface, creating a coarse, non-reflective texture with good grip underfoot. This process opens the pores, so a Natural Look sealer is recommended to help reduce staining without altering the finish's appearance.

Honed terrazzo
Honed terrazzo has a smooth, flat matt finish achieved by grinding back the polish, giving it a soft, even look. It's fairly porous, so either a Colour Enhanced sealer to deepen the tones or a Natural Look sealer to keep it unchanged can help reduce staining.

Polished terrazzo
Polished terrazzo is ground and buffed to a glossy, reflective surface that shows off the aggregate with real depth and shine. It's less porous than other finishes, though sealing still helps reduce staining, with a Colour Enhanced sealer to enrich the look or a Natural Look sealer to preserve it.

Sandblasted terrazzo
Sand blasted terrazzo is abraded with fine particles to create a rougher, textured surface with reduced glare and better slip resistance. This finish is more absorbent, so a Colour Enhanced sealer can deepen the colour or a Natural Look sealer can help reduce staining while keeping the look unchanged.

Textured terrazzo
Textured terrazzo refers to the material's naturally uneven, tactile surface rather than a polished or ground finish, often chosen for its grip underfoot. Being more porous, it benefits from a Colour Enhanced sealer to enrich its appearance or a Natural Look sealer to help reduce staining invisibly.

Tumbled terrazzo
Tumbled terrazzo is mechanically softened to give rounded edges and a worn, matt, rustic appearance. This finish tends to be quite porous, so a Natural Look sealer is suited to it, helping reduce staining and moisture absorption without changing its weathered character.
