Rust Stain Remover for Tiles, Stone and Pavers
Rust stains are orange to brown marks left by iron. They come from metal furniture legs, pot plants, fertiliser, bore water, reinforcing steel and iron minerals inside the stone itself. Rust bonds into porous surfaces, so ordinary cleaners rarely shift it, and many rust removers are acids that can etch stone and concrete.
Rust Away: non-acidic rust remover
Rust Away is a Professional Grade, non-acidic, pH neutral rust, iron, bore water, metal oxide and fertiliser stain remover. Because it is non-etching, it suits acid-sensitive surfaces as well as tiles. It comes in 250 mL, 1 L and 4 L, and is made in Australia.
Where can I use Rust Away?
- Acid-sensitive stone and surfaces: marble, limestone, travertine, terrazzo, bluestone, basalt, concrete, encaustic tiles, saltillo and shellstone.
- Tiles: porcelain, ceramic, tessellated and quarry tiles, plus grout.
- Outdoors: pavers, sandstone, granite, slate and pool surrounds. It also helps lift fertiliser stains.
For heavy rust on acid-resistant surfaces only (porcelain and ceramic tiles, clay pavers, granite, quartzite, sandstone, slate), OxiTreat+ or Oxi Gel+ can also help. Never use them on marble, limestone, travertine, terrazzo, concrete, bluestone or other acid-sensitive surfaces.
How to remove rust stains from tiles and stone
- Remove the source: lift pot plants and metal objects and fix leaking irrigation. Otherwise the stain will return.
- Clean first: wash with XtremeClean+ so the product can reach the stain.
- Apply Rust Away: wet the stain with Rust Away and leave it to work. You will often see the stain change colour as the iron dissolves.
- Agitate and rinse: scrub lightly with a soft brush, then rinse well with clean water.
- Repeat: old, deep stains can need several applications.
- Protect: once dry, seal porous stone, grout and pavers with Aqua-Seal Gold+ to help reduce future staining.
Some stones contain iron minerals that can rust from within. Rust Away helps remove the surface staining, and sealing helps reduce water getting to the iron.
Always test a small, inconspicuous area first. See also our Stain Removal Guide, the Problem Solvers collection or Shop by surface.
Frequently asked questions
What removes rust stains from porcelain tiles?
Rust Away is a non-acidic rust remover suitable for porcelain and ceramic tiles. For heavy rust on these acid-resistant tiles, OxiTreat+ or Oxi Gel+ can also help. Test a small area first.
Is Rust Away safe on marble and travertine?
Yes. Rust Away is non-acidic and non-etching, made for acid-sensitive surfaces such as marble, limestone, travertine and terrazzo. Test a small area first.
How do I remove fertiliser stains from pavers?
Rust Away helps lift fertiliser and iron stains from pavers and stone. Rinse well and repeat if needed, then seal to help reduce future staining.
Can I use CLR or vinegar on stone?
Acidic products can etch marble, limestone, travertine, terrazzo and concrete. Use a non-acidic product such as Rust Away instead.
Why do rust stains come back?
Usually the source is still there, such as bore water, metal objects or iron minerals in the stone. Remove the source where possible and seal the surface after cleaning.
